Where Do You Even Start With a Home Renovation? | McDonald Trade Network

I don’t know about you, but the thought of starting a renovation genuinely overwhelms my brain sometimes.

I watch YouTube videos of people completely transforming homes and honestly wonder how they even know where to begin. There’s so much involved, so many decisions to make, and about a hundred different moving parts behind the scenes.

Where do you even start?

And honestly, I think this is exactly why so many people put renovations off for months… sometimes years.

Because most people aren’t builders. You’re not expected to know how renovations work.

Most homeowners have never planned a kitchen renovation before. Or an extension. Or a loft conversion.

So when people start thinking about renovating their home, it can feel overwhelming very quickly.

Usually because your brain instantly jumps to everything at once.

Budgets.

Builders.

Planning permission.

Pinterest boards.

Timelines.

Choosing finishes.

Finding trades you trust.

It’s a lot.

So if you’re thinking about renovating your home, here’s probably the best advice I could give:

Don’t start with the finishes. Start with the function.

A lot of people immediately start looking at colours, tiles and inspiration photos, but the best renovations normally start with asking:

“How do I actually want this space to work?”

Do you need more storage?

More natural light?

A better layout?

More open space for family life?

A home office?

A kitchen that actually works when people are round?

That’s usually where the best ideas come from.

I also think people massively underestimate how important planning is before work even begins.

Not just planning the design, but planning the process itself.

Who’s managing the project?

What order do trades come in?

How long will things realistically take?

What happens if unexpected issues pop up halfway through?

Because they usually do.

That doesn’t mean something’s gone wrong either — older homes especially nearly always uncover surprises once work starts. Hidden pipework, old electrics, uneven walls, outdated layouts… it’s all really common.

And honestly, that’s another reason renovations can feel stressful for people. There’s a lot of uncertainty involved.

I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to figure everything out all at once before they even begin.

You really don’t need every single detail planned perfectly from day one.

Most successful renovations happen step by step.

Usually it starts with:

“We need more space.”

Or:

“This room just doesn’t work anymore.”

And then the plan slowly builds from there.

I also think social media has slightly warped people’s expectations of renovations sometimes.

You see these incredible transformations condensed into a 30 second video and forget there were months of planning, budgeting, meetings, delays, decisions and hard work behind it all.

Real renovations are exciting, but they’re also messy, noisy, stressful at times and full of decision making.

That’s normal too.

But when it’s done properly, it completely changes how a home feels to live in.

A better layout can genuinely make day-to-day life easier.

A kitchen becomes somewhere people actually want to spend time.

An extension can completely change how a family uses their home.

A loft conversion can create space you didn’t even realise you were missing.

Good renovations aren’t just about making homes look nicer. They make them function better too.

So if you’re sitting there with renovation ideas in your head but feeling overwhelmed about where to begin, honestly, that’s probably more normal than you think.

Most people start there.

And usually, the hardest part is simply starting the conversation in the first place.
