Wall panelling has taken over interiors! It’s stylish, versatile, and can completely transform a space. But if you’ve never picked up a screwdriver, the idea of tackling panelling yourself can feel overwhelming. Don’t worry… we’ve broken it down into simple steps so you can decide if it’s a project you want to try yourself (and when it might be time to call in the pros!).

Step 1: Measure & Plan

• Measure your wall carefully, then sketch out your panel design.

• Decide on the panel size and style (shaker, grid, or full-height).

• Mark your wall with a pencil so you can visualise the layout before you commit.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

Here’s a simple shopping list to get you started:

• MDF strips or pre-cut panelling kits

• Strong adhesive (like grab adhesive)

• Nails or screws (optional, for extra hold)

• Filler for gaps

• Primer and paint

• Sandpaper or sander

Step 3: Tools You’ll Need

Don’t panic — you don’t need a workshop!

• Tape measure

• Spirit level

• Pencil

• Saw (a hand saw is fine for beginners)

• Sandpaper or electric sander

• Paintbrush or roller

Step 4: Cut & Prep

• Cut your MDF strips to size.

• Sand down edges so they’re smooth.

• If painting in a bold colour, consider priming your strips before fitting.

Step 5: Fix to the Wall

• Use adhesive to secure panels to the wall.

• Check each one with a spirit level to keep everything straight.

• Fill any gaps or nail holes, then sand smooth once dry.

Step 6: Finish & Paint

• Once everything is secure, paint your wall and panels together for a seamless look.

• For extra drama, go bold with a deep shade — or keep it light and airy for subtle elegance.

Pro Tips for Beginners

• Start small — one wall is plenty for your first go.

• Pre-paint panels before fitting to save time.

• Check your wall is flat before starting — bumps can cause wonky panels.

When to Call the Pros

DIY panelling can be done, but sometimes it’s best to bring in experts:
